What is a Grassland?

Grasslands are the vast, open areas of land dominated by grasses rather than trees and shrubs. Covering a quarter of the land surface, those sprawling ecosystems are found on every continent except Antarctica. These are often referred to as Transitional Landscapes, found between forests and deserts, and are vital for agriculture, biodiversity, and the global climate.

Types of Grassland

Grasslands are categorised into two categories based on their Climate.

1. Tropical Grasslands
2. Temperate Grasslands

Tropical Grasslands

• Found close to the equator, in the Tropical Zone.
• Characterised by warm temperatures year-round with distinct wet and dry seasons.
• The grasses are typically taller.
• The most well-known type is Savanna

Temperate Grasslands

• Found further from equators, in the mid-latitude.
• Characterised by greater temperature variation, with hot summers and cold winters.
• These grasses are typically shorter.
• Common names include Prairies (in North America) and Steppes (in Eurasia)
